Skip the airport currency exchange. Use a crypto card with zero FX fees, tap to pay at 7-Eleven with Apple Pay, and withdraw yen from ATMs at just 2%. All cards personally tested in Japan.
Airport currency exchange booths (両替所) in Japan typically charge 3–5% hidden fees on top of the mid-market rate. Exchanging ¥100,000 (about $670) costs you ¥3,000–¥5,000 in fees alone.
With Tria Card's 0% FX markup, that same ¥100,000 costs nothing extra — and you earn up to 8% cashback on top.
| Method | FX Fee | Cost on ¥100,000 | Cashback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tria Card | 0% | ¥0 | Up to 8% |
| KAST Card | 0% (USD) | ¥0 (USD) | 2–4% |
| Regular credit card | 1.63–3% | ¥1,630–3,000 | 1% |
| Airport exchange booth | 3–5% | ¥3,000–5,000 | 0% |
| Hotel exchange desk | 5–8% | ¥5,000–8,000 | 0% |
7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart all accept Visa tap-to-pay. Register your card to Apple Pay before arrival and tap your iPhone at the register. Works exactly like back home.
Major hotels accept Visa. Traditional ryokan often cash-only — use RedotPay to withdraw yen from a nearby ATM. Budget for about ¥110–220 local ATM surcharge.
Shinkansen tickets: book via website with Visa. IC card (Suica) gates: use Apple Pay directly. Some regional trains are cash-only — have RedotPay ATM cash ready.
City restaurants increasingly accept card/QR. Ramen shops, izakaya, and local spots are often cash-only. Withdraw cash in the morning to cover the day's meals.
7-Bank ATMs (inside 7-Eleven) are most reliable for foreign cards. Japan Post ATMs also work well. Avoid small local bank ATMs — often Japan-issued cards only.
Akihabara, Donki, and major department stores: Visa accepted everywhere. Tax-free shopping (消費税免除) for tourists: bring your passport for purchases over ¥5,000.
KYC (ID verification) takes a few hours to 1 day. Use passport or national ID. Apply early — don't rush before departure.
Open the card app → find "Add to Apple Wallet" → authenticate with Face ID. Test it at a local store before flying.
Japanese exchanges require Japanese residency. Top up from your home country exchange. Use TRC20 for lowest transfer fees.
Some Japanese terminals require PIN entry. Set it in the app. Don't rely solely on tap-to-pay.
If the ATM asks "Would you like to be charged in your home currency?" — always say NO. DCC locks you into a terrible exchange rate.
⚠️ Bybit Card does not work in Japan. Bybit withdrew from Japan in 2023. Using a Bybit account as a Japan resident violates their ToS and risks account freezing. Use KAST, Tria, or RedotPay instead.
ℹ️ All information on this page is based on real hands-on testing by Nira, a Japan resident, as of April 2026. KYC was completed, Apple Pay registered, and in-store payments made at Japanese convenience stores with all recommended cards.
Visa-branded crypto cards work at most modern stores, hotels, and restaurants in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and other major cities. Rural areas, smaller restaurants, and traditional shops often require cash. Always carry some yen for cash-only situations.
Unlike traditional banks, most crypto card companies don't require travel notifications. However, it's worth checking your card's app for any Japan-specific restrictions before departure.
Yes. Apple Pay (and contactless Visa in general) is widely accepted at convenience stores, most chain restaurants, department stores, and hotels. The contactless payment symbol (wave icon) indicates acceptance.
Budget for cash needs: smaller restaurants, temples, vending machines, taxis in rural areas. For a 7-day trip, ¥20,000–¥50,000 in cash is typically sufficient for cash-only situations. Withdraw from 7-Bank ATMs with RedotPay for the lowest fees.
Yes. These cards are available internationally. KYC requires a valid government ID from your country. Japan residency is NOT required to use KAST, Tria, or RedotPay. Only Japanese domestic cards like HashPort or Slash Card require Japan residency.
